The 1991 Malayalam comedy-drama film “Kilukkam,” directed by Priyadarshan and written by Venu Nagavalli, unfolds in the picturesque hill station of Ooty. Upon its release on August 15, 1991, “Kilukkam” garnered widespread critical acclaim and immense commercial success, establishing itself as a landmark in Malayalam cinema. It became the highest-grossing Malayalam film of 1991 and, for a period, held the record for the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time, being the first to cross the ₹1 crore mark from theatricals alone and eventually grossing ₹5 crore. Critics lauded Priyadarshan’s seamless direction, the witty screenplay, and the exceptional performances, particularly highlighting Mohanlal’s impeccable comic timing and Revathi’s nuanced portrayal.
