## Vaanku: A Bold Female Voice Challenging Tradition in Kerala
Vaanku is a 2021 Malayalam-language drama film set in a conservative Kerala town and follows the aspirations of Rasiya, a young Muslim woman whose deepest desire is to recite the adhan (the Islamic call to prayer)—an act traditionally reserved for men. This central wish becomes a catalyst for discussion among Rasiya and her close-knit group of female friends during their final year in college, prompting each to confront their own ambitions and the boundaries set by society.
Directed by Kavya Prakash and adapted from Unni R.’s 2018 short story, the film features Anaswara Rajan as Rasiya, alongside Nandhana Varma, Gopika Ramesh, and Meenakshi Unnikrishnan. The supporting cast includes notable names like Joy Mathew, Vineeth, and Thesni Khan. The screenplay was written by Shabna Mohammed, with music composed by Ouseppachan and cinematography by Arjun Ravi. Production was undertaken by Shimoga Creations, 7 J Films, and Trends Ad Film Makers.
Vaanku received attention for foregrounding themes of gender equality, religious tradition, and youth empowerment within Kerala’s Muslim community. Critics commended its earnest intention and the bravery of the performances, particularly by Anaswara Rajan, even as opinions diverged regarding the film’s narrative pacing and resolution. Its release was delayed due to the pandemic, ultimately premiering on January 29, 2021.
