2001-ൽ പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയ “ഉത്തമൻ” എന്ന മലയാള ചിത്രം വിശ്വസ്തതയുടെയും ത്യാഗത്തിന്റെയും ആഴങ്ങൾ അനാവരണം ചെയ്യുന്നു. അനാഥനായ ഉത്തമൻ എന്ന കേന്ദ്ര കഥാപാത്രത്തെയാണ് ചിത്രം അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. അഭയവും സ്നേഹവും നൽകിയ ഒരു കുടുംബവുമായി അവൻ അവിചാരിതമായി അടുക്കുന്നു. കുടുംബത്തിൽ ഒരു കൊലപാതകം നടക്കുമ്പോൾ, യഥാർത്ഥ കുറ്റവാളിയെ സംരക്ഷിക്കാൻ വേണ്ടി ഉത്തമൻ സ്വയം കുറ്റം ഏറ്റെടുക്കുന്നു. എന്നിരുന്നാലും, അവന്റെ ത്യാഗം അവനെ അപകടത്തിലാക്കുന്നു. കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടയാളുടെ സഹോദരങ്ങൾ പ്രതികാരം തേടി വരികയും അവന്റെ സുരക്ഷയ്ക്കും കുടുംബത്തിന്റെ ദുർബലമായ ഐക്യത്തിനും ഭീഷണിയാകുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു.

ജയറാം ടൈറ്റിൽ റോളിൽ എത്തുന്ന ഈ ചിത്രത്തിൽ ശക്തമായൊരു താരനിരയുണ്ട്. സിന്ധു മേനോൻ (ഗൗരി), സംഗീത (ദേവിക), സിദ്ദിഖ് (എസ്.ഐ. ജയരാജ്) എന്നിവരും ഒപ്പം കവിയൂർ പൊന്നമ്മ, ഇന്നസെന്റ്, ബാബു ആന്റണി, കെപിഎസി ലളിത, നെടുമുടി വേണു തുടങ്ങിയ പ്രശസ്ത അഭിനേതാക്കളും സഹകഥാപാത്രങ്ങളെ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. ടി.എ. റസാഖാണ് തിരക്കഥ രചിച്ചത്. ജോൺസൺ ഒരുക്കിയ സംഗീതവും കൈതപ്രം ദാമോദരൻ നമ്പൂതിരിയുടെ വരികളും കഥയുടെ വൈകാരിക ഭാരം വർദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.

അനിൽ – ബാബു കൂട്ടുകെട്ട് സംവിധാനം ചെയ്ത “ഉത്തമൻ” റിലീസ് ചെയ്തപ്പോൾ സമ്മിശ്ര പ്രതികരണമാണ് നേടിയത്. ജയറാമിന്റെ വൈകാരികമായ പ്രകടനത്തെയും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ കഥാപാത്രം നേരിടുന്ന ധാർമ്മിക പ്രശ്നങ്ങളെയും പല പ്രേക്ഷകരും എടുത്തുപറഞ്ഞു. വലിയ ഒരു ബ്ലോക്ക്ബസ്റ്റർ ആയിരുന്നില്ലെങ്കിലും, കുടുംബബന്ധങ്ങളെയും വിശ്വസ്തതയ്ക്ക് വേണ്ടിയുള്ള കഠിനമായ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പുകളെയും കുറിച്ചുള്ള ആത്മാർത്ഥമായ ചിത്രീകരണത്തിന് ഈ ചിത്രം പലപ്പോഴും ഓർമ്മിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.
