Synopsis
“The Looking Glass” is a poignant exploration of memory, art, and the passage of time, centered on Kaladharan, an aging filmmaker who finds himself reflecting on his life and career. As he revisits his past works, he is haunted by the choices he made in shaping the destinies of his fictional characters, particularly Sreeram, whose fate was altered by Kaladharan’s creative decisions. The film unfolds as a meditative journey, blurring the lines between reality and fiction, and inviting viewers into the introspective world of an artist confronting his legacy.
Through intimate conversations and vivid flashbacks, the narrative delves into the emotional and ethical complexities of storytelling. Kaladharan grapples with the consequences of his artistic interventions, questioning whether he has the right to manipulate lives—even imaginary ones—for the sake of art. The film poignantly examines the relationship between creator and creation, and how the act of storytelling can both heal and wound, echoing the universal struggle to reconcile one’s past with the present.
Set against the backdrop of Kerala’s cinematic landscape, “The Looking Glass” is as much a tribute to the art of filmmaking as it is a personal reckoning. With its contemplative tone and layered performances, the movie invites audiences to look into their own “looking glass,” reflecting on the choices they’ve made and the stories they’ve told. It is a quiet yet powerful meditation on love, regret, and the enduring power of art to shape our understanding of ourselves and others.
