## Sasneham Sumitra: A Malayalam Mystery Inspired by Classic Literature
Sasneham Sumitra is a 2004 Malayalam-language film directed by Ambadi Krishnan, featuring Suresh Gopi in the lead role alongside Renjini Krishnan, Siddique, Lalu Alex, Saikumar, Bindu Panicker, and Kalasala Babu. Drawing its central inspiration from Daphne du Maurier’s acclaimed novel “Rebecca”, the film weaves romance, psychological suspense, and murder mystery into the life of Navy officer Balachandran (Balan).
The story follows Balan, who marries Sumitra after falling in love with her, only to resign from the Navy and start a business, much to the displeasure of Sumitra’s family. Sumitra dies under mysterious circumstances, initially seen as suicide. Balan later marries Seetha, but the discovery of Sumitra’s skeleton in the family estate well sparks a murder investigation. Inspector Muhammed Kutty leads the official inquiry, but Balan and his brother-in-law Shekhar conduct a parallel investigation, leading to the arrest of the true killer.
Produced and directed by Ambadi Krishnan, the film features a score by Ouseppachan and performances by an ensemble of noted Malayalam actors. While Sasneham Sumitra did not receive major national awards, it was recognized for its adaptation of classic suspense literature into a Kerala setting and holds a modest but consistent viewer rating across platforms. The film is available for streaming on select platforms including Prime Video, but remains relatively under the radar in terms of critical acclaim.
