The film tells the poignant story of Radha, a young woman from an impoverished background with aspirations of becoming a renowned singer. She falls in love with Sasikumar, who refers to himself as “Junior Yesudas” and harbors similar struggles due to his own family’s poverty. Their budding romance faces a blow when Sasikumar, burdened by family obligations and financial hardships, refuses Radha’s plea for marriage. Heartbroken, Radha attempts suicide but is saved by her cousin, whose own suppressed love and concern for her bring a new direction to her life.
Upon its release, Sallaapam was praised for its evocative storytelling, heartfelt performances, and memorable music. Manju Warrier’s portrayal of Radha is widely regarded as a landmark in her career, and the film’s genuine depiction of rural struggles and emotional resonance contributed to its standing as one of the significant romantic dramas in Malayalam cinema.
