About the Movie
“Paradise” (2024), directed by Prasanna Vithanage, follows a young Malayali couple, Keshav and Ammu, who travel to Sri Lanka to celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary. Their vacation, intended as a peaceful retreat, quickly unravels amidst the backdrop of Sri Lanka’s severe political and economic crisis. The couple’s personal relationship begins to mirror the chaos around them, exposing underlying tensions and vulnerabilities.
As the story progresses, Keshav and Ammu face unexpected challenges when their phones and laptops are stolen on the very first night, disrupting their plans and forcing them into a tense cat-and-mouse game involving local thieves and police. This ordeal not only reveals the fractured social and bureaucratic systems of Sri Lanka but also deepens the exploration of the couple’s marriage, highlighting power struggles and emotional fractures in their relationship.
Set against a landscape of turmoil and despair, “Paradise” offers a poignant reflection on the fragility of human connections in times of crisis. The film uses the couple’s journey to question traditional marital roles and consumerist aspirations, while also weaving in symbolic references to the Ramayana, adding layers of cultural and philosophical depth to this intensely psychological drama.
