Synopsis
## Oru Muthassi Katha: A Tale of Love and Conflict in a Coastal Village
Oru Muthassi Katha (A Grandmother’s Tale) is a Malayalam-language drama film released in 1988, directed by Priyadarshan and penned by the popular writer Jagadeesh. Set against the vibrant backdrop of a fishing village on Kerala’s western coast, the film weaves a story filled with intrigue, vengeance, and romance. The narrative centers around Chemparundu, a feared figure accused of multiple murders in the community, whose daughter Karthu falls in love with Chanthu, a village orphan. The arrival of Unnikrishnan, a mysterious young man appearing to be interested in the local fishing business, adds further layers of suspense and emotional complexity.
The film showcases a strong ensemble cast: Vineeth plays Chanthu, while Nirosha stars as Karthu, ably supported by Thiagarajan as the menacing Chemparundu. Other significant performances include K. B. Ganesh Kumar as Unnikrishnan, M. G. Soman as Mayinkutty, Sukumaran as Rajasekharan, and well-known actors like Innocent, Lizy, Jalaja, Maniyanpilla Raju, Jagadish, Jagathy Sreekumar, Thikkurissy Sukumaran Nair, and Sukumari in diverse roles. The music and atmospheric village setting further enhance the film’s authenticity, providing glimpses into the traditional lives, struggles, and aspirations of the coastal folk.
Upon its release, Oru Muthassi Katha received mixed reviews and did not succeed at the box office. While some critics appreciated the attempt at blending melodrama with the realities of village life, and the performances of the leading cast, the film struggled to leave a lasting impact, especially when compared to Priyadarshan’s other successful works from the 1980s. Over the years, it has gained some attention for its cast and as a lesser-known work in the director’s filmography.
