Synopsis
“Manichitrathazhu” (1993), translated as “The Ornate Lock,” is a landmark Indian Malayalam-language psychological horror film directed by Fazil. The story centers around Nakulan and his wife Ganga, who decide to reside in Nakulan’s ancestral mansion, the Madampalli Tharavad, in Kerala, despite warnings that it is haunted. Soon after they move in, eerie and seemingly supernatural events begin to unfold, including strange noises and objects catching fire, largely attributed by the family to the vengeful spirit of Nagavalli, a tragic Tamil dancer who was murdered centuries ago in the house. As Ganga becomes increasingly fascinated and disturbed by the legend of Nagavalli, her behavior grows erratic, leading the family to believe she is possessed. To unravel the mystery, Nakulan calls upon his friend, the renowned psychiatrist Dr. Sunny Joseph (Mohanlal), whose arrival shifts the narrative from a supernatural ghost story to a psychological thriller, as he attempts to find a scientific explanation for the unsettling occurrences.
Dr. Sunny Joseph, with his unconventional methods, delves into the family’s history and Ganga’s psyche, eventually uncovering a complex case of dissociative identity disorder (DID) rather than a ghostly possession. The film brilliantly explores the intricate interplay between superstition and science, traditional beliefs and modern psychology, culminating in a dramatic and thrilling climax where Dr. Sunny must cure Ganga by staging an elaborate ritual to appease the supposed spirit of Nagavalli. Shobana’s exceptional portrayal of Ganga/Nagavalli earned her the National Film Award for Best Actress, and the movie itself received the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. It became the highest-grossing Malayalam film of 1993 and is widely regarded as one of the best thrillers ever made in Indian cinema, inspiring successful remakes in multiple languages, including Kannada (Apthamitra), Tamil (Chandramukhi), and Hindi (Bhool Bhulaiyaa).
