Kalyanaraman
Synopsis
Kalyanaraman is a 2002 Malayalam romantic comedy film directed by Shafi and written by Benny P. Nayarambalam, starring Dileep, Navya Nair, and Kunchacko Boban. The film follows Ramankutty and his family, who run a catering and wedding management business. Their lives take a dramatic turn when they take up the responsibility for the wedding of Ambattu Thampi’s daughter, connecting Ramankutty to the family’s younger daughter, Gauri, with whom he gradually develops a romantic bond.
After a series of unforeseen events such as the cancellation of Radhika’s wedding and a tragic kitchen fire that claims her life, Ramankutty and Gauri’s families agree on their marriage. Just before the wedding, Gauri has a near-fatal electric shock incident, prompting Thampi to consult an astrologer. The astrologer reveals a family curse: women marrying into Ramankutty’s family tend to die young, a superstition rooted in multiple previous tragedies. Pressured by Thampi to save Gauri’s life, Ramankutty calls off the wedding, pretending discomfort about her relationship with her cousin Unni, leaving Gauri heartbroken.
Gauri learns the truth about Ramankutty’s sacrifice and rushes to find him but meets with an accident. As she fights for her life in the hospital, she requests Ramankutty to tie the wedding knot before her surgery. He obliges, fearing for her survival, but miraculously she recovers. The story, told in flashback, concludes with Ramankutty and Gauri living happily, and Ramankutty visiting the temple to give thanks, symbolizing the triumph of love and devotion over superstition and adversity.
