Synopsis
Garjanam’s Thunderous Stand Against Evil
In the heart-pounding 1981 Malayalam thriller Garjanam, Rajinikanth roars into action as the fearless Dr. Vijay, an honest physician battling a sinister syndicate. Led by the diabolical Dr. Mithra and his ruthless accomplice Parasuram, the gang poisons everyday food supplies with deadly toxins, only to profit by selling the antidotes to desperate victims. As Vijay uncovers their heinous plot, he races against time to protect his love Geetha, played by the captivating Madhavi, and his devoted sister Rekha, weaving a tale of unrelenting courage and high-stakes confrontations.
Directed by C. V. Rajendran, Garjanam stands out for its gripping production saga, originally slated to star the legendary Jayan in the lead. Tragedy struck when Jayan met an untimely death during another film’s shoot, prompting Rajinikanth to step in and complete the role, with some of Jayan’s footage preserved in the opening reel for Kerala audiences. Featuring a stellar supporting cast including Balan K. Nair, Kuthiravattam Pappu, Sukumari, and M. N. Nambiar, the film pulses with Ilaiyaraaja’s iconic soundtrack, blending pulsating action sequences and melodic romance that defined early ’80s cinema.
Despite its commercial underperformance alongside its Tamil and Kannada counterparts, Garjanam holds a unique place in Malayalam film history as Rajinikanth‘s final venture in the language, marking the end of an era. Audiences remember it for its bold exploration of corporate greed and medical ethics, intense stunt work—including a memorable incident where a stuntman was hospitalized—and its enduring cult appeal among fans of masala action thrillers. A roaring testament to resilience both on and off screen, it captures the raw energy of its time.
