About the Movie
Set in a dystopian Kerala of the 2040s, “Gaganachari” follows the lives of three quirky bachelors—Alan John Valamparambil, Victor Vasudevan, and Vaishnav—who share an apartment in a world transformed by an alien invasion that began in 2030. Victor, an ex-military veteran known as an alien hunter, and his roommates navigate their strange existence while tolerating each other’s eccentricities amidst the flood-ravaged landscape.
The film unfolds as a satirical sci-fi mockumentary, blending absurd comedy with sharp social commentary. When a mute female alien fugitive named Eliyamma suddenly arrives at their doorstep, the trio’s mundane life is turned upside down, leading to a series of hilarious and unexpected events. The alien, unable to speak initially, communicates through a speech machine that, when fixed, causes comical moments as her voice surprises the group.
“Gaganachari” stands out for its innovative approach to the sci-fi genre within Malayalam cinema, mixing nostalgia for 80s and 90s Malayalam films with contemporary visual storytelling. The movie balances humor with a subtle reflection on humanity’s exploitation of nature and the consequences of a changed world, supported by strong performances, especially from Ganesh Kumar, and a fitting musical score by Sankar Sharma. It has been praised for its clever screenplay, unique concept, and universal appeal beyond regional audiences.
