Synopsis
Five Star Hospital is a 1997 Indian Malayalam-language drama film directed by Thaha. Produced and distributed by Screen Art Productions, the movie highlights the contrasting realities of government and private healthcare systems.
Hospital Operations
The storyline centers around Rafael, an emerging singer who works alongside a troupe owner named Adipoli Ayeemutti. Rafael gets admitted to MKM Hospital under the alias O. Joseph, where he is treated by Dr. Nambiar, a corrupt physician who routinely prescribes unnecessary medical tests. While navigating this environment, Rafael crosses paths with Dr. Sethulakshmi, an honest doctor who frequently clashes with Nambiar over his unethical practices.
Uncovering the Past
Through flashbacks, the audience learns that Rafael was raised by a butcher named Carlos, though the young man preferred singing in a church choir over killing animals. Upon discovering he is actually adopted, Rafael embarks on a quest to find his true parents and realizes that Dr. Sethulakshmi is his biological mother. During this emotional journey, he must also survive the dangerous schemes of a man named Varma who is determined to have him killed.
Key Performances
The film features George Vishnu in the leading role of Rafael, supported by an ensemble cast that includes Jagadish as Adipoli Aymooti and Jagathy Sreekumar as Gopalan. Veteran actor Thilakan delivers a strong performance as Carlos, while Geetha portrays the principled Dr. Sethulakshmi and N. F. Varghese plays the villainous Dr. Nambiar. The supporting cast is further strengthened by notable appearances from Malayalam cinema stalwarts like Kalpana, Sukumari, Devan, and Mala Aravindan.
Soundtrack and Composition
Music is an integral part of the film’s narrative, primarily because the main protagonist pursues a career as a professional singer. The acclaimed Bombay Ravi composed the movie’s musical score, perfectly complementing the Malayalam lyrics penned by Yusufali Kecheri. The soundtrack features the vocal talents of legendary Indian playback singers such as K. J. Yesudas, K. S. Chithra, and K. G. Markose.
