Synopsis
David David Mr. David (1988) is a Malayalam-language action thriller directed by Viji Thampi. The film stars Balachandra Menon, Ashokan and Murali – all playing men named David – alongside Sumalatha as the female lead. In the opening scenes, one David (Menon) is fleeing police and goons and takes refuge in the home of Sumalatha, who is attempting suicide. His two childhood friends Shivasankaran (Murali) and Jayan (Ashokan) soon arrive; the three have been running from a gangster (Thiagarajan as Singh) after being forced into a counterfeit currency operation. The backstory (shown in flashback) reveals the Davids were railway porters tricked by Singh, who betrayed them when a dead body was discovered in a shipment. The trio hides in Sumalatha’s house (where they also help Annie and her child), gradually repairing past wrongs – including reclaiming Sumalatha’s estate from a corrupt manager. In the climactic finale, David (Menon) escapes Singh’s henchmen and confronts the villain at Sumalatha’s estate, ultimately killing Singh in a fight. Sumalatha, having survived her ordeals, later visits David in jail and promises to wait for him, bringing the story to an emotionally charged close.
The film’s tone blends melodrama with suspenseful action. Early scenes are intense and tragic (for example, David encounters Sumalatha’s suicide attempt upon first hiding in her home), setting an urgent, dramatic mood. At the same time the narrative unfolds like a thriller: the Davids are constantly on the run from henchmen, leading to chase and fight sequences. Themes of loyalty and friendship are central (the three Davids risk everything for one another), along with betrayal and revenge (as David seeks justice against Singh). Visually, the movie benefits from experienced cinematographers Santhosh Sivan and Anandakkuttan, suggesting a polished 1980s Malayalam aesthetic, and it is scored by noted composer Raveendran. The music and song sequences underscore the film’s emotional moments, consistent with the melodramatic style of its era.
Released on 24 June 1988, David David Mr. David was produced by Rajan and A. V. Govindankutty under the Sukumaran R. banner. It was Viji Thampi’s directorial debut, before he became known for comedy films in the 1990s. The movie features a strong ensemble cast – besides the three Davids and Sumalatha, supporting roles include veterans like Thilakan, K. P. A. C. Azeez and Lissy. Contemporary reviews are hard to find, but the film is generally regarded as a solid if conventional late-1980s Malayalam thriller. While it did not become a major classic, it is remembered for its unusual premise of three heroes sharing the same name and for its emotional drama, and it retains a cult interest among genre fans. Its production credits (notably the cinematography by Sivan and the Raveendran score) and the ensemble cast are often cited as notable aspects of the film.
