About the Movie
Chenkol is a 1993 Malayalam action drama film directed by Sibi Malayil and written by A. K. Lohithadas, serving as a direct sequel to the critically acclaimed “Kireedam.” The film follows Sethumadhavan, portrayed by Mohanlal, as he attempts to reintegrate into society after serving a prison sentence for the accidental killing of a notorious criminal. Despite his hopes for redemption, Sethumadhavan faces deep societal rejection, with even his own family struggling to accept his return.
The narrative delves into Sethumadhavan’s failed attempts to build a new life, as the stigma of being an ex-convict continually haunts him. He struggles to secure employment, reconnects with his old friend Najeeb, and starts working as a fish vendor with the help of Parameshwaran, a former adversary. The plot grows more complex as the family of the man Sethumadhavan killed seeks revenge, ensnaring him in continued cycles of violence. The emotional core of the film lies in his shattered relationship with his family, especially his father Achuthan Nair, whose disappointment and eventual tragic end underscore the devastating consequences of Sethumadhavan’s fate.
Chenkol’s story is marked by its exploration of themes like societal stigma, cycles of violence, and the hope for personal redemption. Sethumadhavan’s journey is a poignant study of a man crushed by his circumstances, attempting to break free from a predestined cycle. The film is noted for its somber atmosphere, powerful performances—especially by Mohanlal and Thilakan—and its unflinching look at the burdens both individuals and families bear in the aftermath of crime and tragedy.
