Synopsis
“Chattakaari,” a Malayalam romantic drama released on September 13, 2012, is a poignant tale directed by Santosh Sethumadhavan, based on Pamman’s renowned novel and a remake of his father K. S. Sethumadhavan’s 1974 film. The movie centers on Julie (Shamna Kasim), an Anglo-Indian woman whose life takes a dramatic turn when she falls deeply in love with Sasi (Hemanth Menon), the brother of her close Hindu friend, Usha. Their passionate relationship culminates in an unplanned pregnancy, setting the stage for Julie’s arduous journey. The narrative bravely explores her struggles and the challenges faced by her child amidst the judgmental and often hypocritical strictures of society. The film delves into significant social themes prevalent in Kerala, such as the unique experiences of the Anglo-Indian community, the escalating issue of premarital pregnancy, and the enduring taboos surrounding inter-caste love and marriage.
Despite the contemporary relevance of its themes, the 2012 remake received a mixed reception. Critics largely noted that the film offered “nothing new” compared to its 1974 predecessor, often appearing “misplaced” and failing to capture the emotional depth of its characters effectively. While Shamna Kasim’s portrayal of Julie was acknowledged as a strong effort, performances from other lead actors like Hemanth Menon and Innocent were described as less engaging. However, the film did garner praise for its technical aspects, with the cinematography by Vinod Ilampally and the music composed by M. Jayachandran being highlighted as commendable elements. Produced by G. Suresh Kumar under the Revathy Kalamandhir banner, “Chattakaari” aimed to revisit an everlasting love story but struggled to resonate with audiences as a fresh cinematic experience.
