Aa Raathri ആ രാത്രി

“Aa Raathri” (That Night) is a 1983 Malayalam drama film directed by Joshiy and written by Kaloor Dennis, with Mammootty and Poornima Bhagyaraj in the lead roles. It is widely noted as a major commercial success and is often cited as the first Malayalam film to collect around 1 crore in distributors’ share.​​

The film was released on 23 April 1983 under the banner Jubilee Productions, produced by Joy Thomas. It is set primarily in Thiruvananthapuram and presents itself as a family-oriented drama that gradually shifts into a dark, revenge-driven narrative.​​

The story follows Ravi, a bank employee, and his wife Indu, who live a happy life with their young daughter Minimol until a chain of traumatic events destroys their peace. On a train journey, they meet Radha, a girl fleeing an abusive stepfather to find her fiancé Venu, and they shelter her, unknowingly setting off events that tie all their lives together.​

The plot turns tragic when some of Venu’s wayward friends, seeking revenge after being publicly humiliated by Indu for their misbehavior, abduct and rape her, leading to a court case. Abdu, a professional false witness, testifies against Indu, the culprits walk free, and the shock drives Indu to suicide; Abdu later discovers she is his long-lost sister, pushing the film into a grim revenge climax where Ravi and Abdu kill the criminals.​

Music is composed by Ilaiyaraaja, with lyrics by Poovachal Khader, and the songs are integral to the film’s emotional tone. The soundtrack, combined with strong performances by Mammootty, Poornima Bhagyaraj, Rohini, M. G. ഇന്ദുവിന്റെ ഇടപെടലിൽ അപമാനിതരായ വേണുവിന്റെ സുഹൃത്തുക്കൾ പക തീർക്കാനായി അവളെ തട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടുപോയി ഉപദ്രവിക്കുന്നു. തുടർന്ന് നടക്കുന്ന കോടതി കേസിൽ, പ്രൊഫഷണൽ കള്ളസാക്ഷിയായ അബ്ദു അവർക്കെതിരെ സാക്ഷി പറയുന്നതോടെ പ്രതികൾ രക്ഷപ്പെടുന്നു. ഈ ആഘാതത്തിൽ ഇന്ദു ആത്മഹത്യ ചെയ്യുന്നു. എന്നാൽ പിന്നീട് ഇന്ദു തന്റെ വർഷങ്ങൾക്ക് മുൻപ് നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട സഹോദരിയായിരുന്നുവെന്ന് അബ്ദു തിരിച്ചറിയുന്നതോടെ കഥ മാറുന്നു. അവസാനം രവിയും അബ്ദുവും ചേർന്ന് കുറ്റവാളികളെ വകവരുത്തുന്നതോടെയാണ് ചിത്രം അവസാനിക്കുന്നത്.
