## Vidyasagar: The Melody King of South Indian Cinema

Vidyasagar Ramachandra Rao, born on March 2, 1963, in Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh, is an acclaimed Indian composer, musician, and singer who has made significant contributions to the Tamil, Malayalam, and Telugu film industries. Often referred to as the “Melody King,” Vidyasagar was born into a family with a rich musical heritage; his father U. Ramachander was a musician proficient in eight instruments, and his grandfather Varaha Narasimha Murthy served as the court ‘Vidhwan’ for the monarch of Vijayanagaram Bobili. His musical education began at the tender age of four when he started learning vocal classical music and harmonium from his father. As he grew, he expanded his musical knowledge by studying classical guitar under Master Dhanraj in Chennai, learning piano, and eventually studying Western classical music at the Trinity College of Music in London.

After serving as an assistant and conductor for several composers, Vidyasagar made his debut as a film composer with the 1989 Tamil film “Poo Manam”. Over his illustrious career spanning more than three decades, he has composed music for over 225 feature films across multiple Indian film industries. His versatility as a composer is evident in his ability to create both melodious compositions like “Nee Katru,” “Orey Manam,” and classical numbers such as “VaralManjal” and “Anandam Anandam,” as well as fast-paced songs for films starring popular Tamil actors including Vikram, Vijay, Ajith, and R. Madhavan. His exceptional talent as a musician extends to his proficiency in playing various instruments including harmonium, santoor, vibraphone, keyboard, piano, guitar, and vocals.

His compositions for films like “Chandramukhi,” “Ghilli,” “Anbe Sivam,” “Dhool,” and “Jomonte Suvisheshangal” have left an indelible mark on South Indian cinema. Most recently, in 2024, he has composed music for films such as “Marivillin Gopurangal,” “Uyir Thamizhukku,” “Double Tuckerr,” and “Aadhi Naath,” demonstrating his continued relevance and creativity in the industry.
