Vani Jairam, born Kalaivani on November 30, 1945, in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, was a legendary Indian playback singer whose mellifluous voice captivated audiences for over five decades. Often revered as the ‘Meera of modern India,’ her career, which began in 1971, saw her lend her vocal prowess to an astonishing repertoire of over 10,000 to 20,000 songs across more than a thousand Indian films. Her versatility was unparalleled, as she effortlessly navigated through 14 to 19 different Indian languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, and Bengali, leaving an indelible mark on each.
