V. Dakshinamoorthy (Venkateswaran Dakshinamoorthy Iyer) was a legendary Indian composer and Carnatic musician who shaped the sound and grammar of Malayalam film music across more than six decades. Revered as “Swami”, he is remembered as a pioneer who seamlessly wove classical ragas into film songs and mentored multiple generations of singers and composers.

He received his initial music training from his mother and later from established gurus, and gave early concerts in Kerala temples, grounding his art in Carnatic tradition and Bhakti.

Dakshinamoorthy entered the film industry in the late 1940s; one of his earliest assignments was the Tamil film “Nalla Thanka” (also associated with early Malayalam cinema).

Over his lifetime he received numerous honours including the Kerala State Film Award for Best Music Director (1971), the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award and Fellowship, the J. C. Daniel Award, and the Swathi Sangeetha Puraskaram from the Government of Kerala.

വി. ദക്ഷിണാമൂർത്തി (വെങ്കടേശ്വരൻ ദക്ഷിണാമൂർത്തി അയ്യർ) മലയാള ചലച്ചിത്രസംഗീതത്തിന്റെ ആത്മാവായി കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്ന മഹാനായ സംഗീതസംവിധായകനും കർണാടക സംഗീതജ്ഞനുമാണ്. ഹരിപ്പാട് ജന്മഭൂമിയായ ഈ സംഗീതയോഗി, ആറാം വയസ്സിൽ അമ്മയുടെ കീഴിൽ സംഗീതപഠനം ആരംഭിച്ച് ക്ഷേത്രഗായനങ്ങളിലും കച്ചേരികളിലും വഴിയൊരുക്കിയാണ് പിന്നീട് ദക്ഷിണേന്ത്യൻ സംഗീതലോകത്തെ “സ്വാമി”യായി ഉയർന്നത്. കർണാടക സംഗീതത്തിലെ ആഴവും ഭക്തിസാന്ദ്രമായ ജീവിതദർശനവും ചേർന്നായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സംഗീതയാത്ര.
ദക്ഷിണാമൂർത്തിയുടെ ജീവിതത്തിൽ വൈക്കത്തപ്പന്റെ ദർശനവും വൈക്കം ക്ഷേത്രവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട അനുഭവങ്ങളും നിർണായകമായിരുന്നു. പതിനാറാം വയസ്സിൽ വൈക്കത്ത് എത്തി സംഗീതം പഠിപ്പിക്കുകയും നാൽപ്പത്തിമൂന്ന് മാസം അവിടെ തങ്ങികൊണ്ട് പ്രതിദിനം നീണ്ടസമയം ഭജനയും നൃത്ത്യോപാസനയും ചെയ്യുകയും ചെയ്തു; മൂന്ന് വർഷത്തിലേറെ ദിവസേന നടത്തുന്ന നിർമാല്യദർശനം അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് സംഗീതപരമായും ആത്മീയമായും അമിതമായ ആഴം നൽകി. സ്വന്തം സംഗീതപ്രതിഭയ്ക്ക് ഗുരുവായ വെങ്കിടാചലം പൊറ്റിയോടും വൈക്കത്തപ്പനോടുമാണ് അദ്ദേഹം ജീവിതം മുഴുവൻ കടപ്പാട് പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ചത്.
1940-കളുടെ തുടക്കത്തിൽ എയർ, കച്ചേരികൾ എന്നിവയിലൂടെ ദക്ഷിണാമൂർത്തിയുടെ കർണാടക സംഗീതപ്രവേശം ശക്തമായി; 1942 മുതൽ 1957 വരെ കേരളത്തിലെന്തൊക്കെയോ വേദികളിൽ ഏകദേശം 500 കച്ചേരികൾ അവതരിപ്പിച്ചു. 1948-ൽ മദ്രാസിലേക്ക് സ്ഥിരതാമസം മാറിയ അതേ വർഷം തമിഴ് ചിത്രമായ “നല്ല തങ്ക”യിലൂടെയാണ് സിനിമയിലെ സംഗീതസംവിധായകനായി അരങ്ങേറ്റം; അതിനുശേഷം മലയാളം, തമിഴ്, ഹിന്ദി, സിംഹള തുടങ്ങിയ ഭാഷകളിൽ നൂറിലധികം സിനിമകൾക്കും നൂറുകണക്കിനു ഗാനങ്ങൾക്കും അദ്ദേഹം സ്വരം നൽകി. മലയാളചലച്ചിത്രസംഗീതത്തിൽ കർണാടകറാഗത്തെ ആധാരമാക്കി രൂപപ്പെട്ട സ്വതന്ത്ര ശൈലി സ്ഥാപിച്ചത് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ തന്നെ കയ്യൊപ്പ് ആയിരുന്നു.
“സംഗീത ഭൂഷണമാർ” എന്നതിനു തുല്യനായ സ്വാമി, കൃതി രൂപകല്പനയിൽ കർശനമായ ശ്രുതി-താളശുദ്ധിയും റാഗഭാവത്തിന്റെ മുഴുവൻ പകിട്ടും ഉറപ്പാക്കിയവനായിരുന്നു. ഹൃദയത്തിൽ ഭക്തിയും തലയിൽ ശാസ്ത്രീയ ബോധവുമുള്ള ഈ സംവിധായകൻ, പി. ഭാസ്ക്കരൻ, വയലാർ, ഒ.എൻ.വി., ശ്രീകുമാരൻ തമ്പി, കണ്ണദാസൻ എന്നിവർ എഴുതിയ വരികൾക്ക് അമരമായ സ്വരചൈതന്യം നൽകി. കെ. ജെ. യേശുദാസ്, പി. ലീല, എസ്. ജനകി, പി. സുശീലയ്ക്ക് തുടങ്ങി അനവധി ഗായകരെ അദ്ദേഹം തൻറെ ശൈലിയിൽ പരിശീലിപ്പിക്കുകയും അവരെ സ്വന്തം സൃഷ്ടികളുടെ വാഗ്മികളാക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ അവസാനവർഷങ്ങളളുവരെ ദക്ഷിണാമൂർത്തി സംഗീതത്തിൽ സജീവനായിരുന്നു; തൊണ്ണൂറ്റി നാലാം വയസ്സിലും “ശ്യാമരാഗം” പോലുള്ള സിനിമകൾക്കായി അദ്ദേഹം സംഗീതം ഒരുക്കിയതിലൂടെ അതുല്യമായ സൃഷ്ടിശക്തി തെളിയിച്ചു. കേരള സംഗീത നാടക അക്കാദമി പുരസ്കാരവും ഫെലോഷിപ്പും, കേരള സംസ്ഥാന ചലച്ചിത്രപുരസ്കാരം, സ്വാതി സങ്കീർത്തന പുരസ്കാരം, സർവ്വകലാശാലാ ഡോക്ടറേറ്റ് തുടങ്ങി അനവധി ബഹുമതികൾ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ തേടിയെത്തിയെങ്കിലും, സ്വന്തം ജീവിതത്തെയും സംഗീതത്തെയും അദ്ദേഹം ഭക്തിയുടെയും നിസ്വാർത്ഥതയുടെയും സേവയെന്ന നിലയിലായിരുന്നു കാണുന്നത്. 2013 ഓഗസ്റ്റ് 2-ന് ചെന്നൈയിൽ അദ്ദേഹം അന്തരിച്ചെങ്കിലും, മലയാളസംഗീതത്തിന്റെ നാഡിയിലൂടെ ഇന്നും മുഴങ്ങുന്ന അനവധി രാഗങ്ങൾ വഴിയാണ് സ്വാമി ദക്ഷിണാമൂർത്തി സജീവമായി തുടരുന്നത്.
