Sujatha Mohan: The Melodious Journey of a South Indian Playback Icon
Sujatha Mohan is a celebrated Indian playback singer whose artistry has made a significant mark on Indian cinema, especially in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada films. Born in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, she hails from a distinguished family—her grandfather D. K. Narayana Pillai served as the first Chief Minister of the erstwhile Travancore-Cochin state. Sujatha showcased her musical talent from a young age, famously performing as “Baby Sujatha” in stage shows with legendary singer K. J. Yesudas. She recorded her very first song, “Kannezhuthy Pottuthottu,” for the Malayalam film Tourist Bungalow in 1975 while still in the sixth grade.
Her career took off rapidly, with early recordings for renowned composers such as M. K. Arjunan, Shyam, Salil Chowdhury, and M. G. Radhakrishnan. Sujatha made her Tamil debut with “Kalai Paniyil” from the film Gayathri (1977), and later achieved widespread recognition in Malayalam cinema through her work in movies like Kadathanadan Ambadi and the cult classic Chithram. She demonstrated remarkable versatility across genres—her voice is noted for both power and subtlety, making her a top choice for varied musical styles. Over her decades-long career, Sujatha has recorded over 4,000 songs, collaborating with prominent composers including Ilaiyaraaja, A. R. Rahman, M. Jayachandran, and Vidyasagar.
