Samuel Joseph, widely known by his professional name Shyam, is a distinguished Indian music composer predominantly celebrated for his extensive contributions to Malayalam cinema. Born on March 18, 1937, in Guindy, Tamil Nadu, Shyam embarked on his musical journey by apprenticing under legendary composers M. S. Viswanathan and Salil Chowdhury, with Viswanathan notably bestowing upon him the name ‘Shyam’. His early career saw him as a versatile lead violinist, collaborating with an array of renowned composers including C. Ramachandra, V. Dakshinamoorthi, Naushad, Madan Mohan, G. Devarajan, Bombay Ravi, and R. D. Burman. His diverse musical foundation includes formal training in both Western and Carnatic classical violin, the latter under the tutelage of the iconic Lalgudi Jayaraman.

Shyam made his independent debut as a film composer in Malayalam cinema with the 1974 film ‘Manyasree Viswamithran’. Over the decades from the mid-1970s to the late 1980s, he established himself as a prolific force in the industry, scoring music for nearly 200 Malayalam films and over 300 films across various Indian languages including Telugu, Kannada, Tamil, and Hindi. He is highly regarded for introducing a distinctive ‘sound’ and Western thematic concepts to mainstream Malayalam cinema, leaving an indelible mark with numerous hit songs and iconic background scores, such as the memorable theme for ‘Oru CBI Diary Kurippu’. His exceptional talent was recognized with the Kerala State Film Award for Best Music Director in 1983 for ‘Aaroodam’ and again in 1984 for ‘Kanamarayathu’. He currently resides in Chennai.
