Biography
Sistla Sreeramamurthy Janaki, affectionately known as S. Janaki and the “Nightingale of South India,” was a legendary Indian playback singer and occasional music composer whose voice graced over 48,000 songs across more than 20 Indian languages, as well as several foreign languages, throughout a prolific career spanning over six decades. Born on April 23, 1938, in Pallapatla, Andhra Pradesh, she began her illustrious journey in 1957, quickly establishing herself as one of the most versatile and influential singers in Indian music history. Her remarkable ability to infuse every lyric with profound emotion and impeccable diction earned her immense adoration, making her a defining voice in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and particularly Malayalam cinema, where she recorded an estimated 2,000 songs.
Beyond her unparalleled vocal prowess, S. Janaki’s legacy is marked by numerous accolades, including four National Film Awards and an impressive 33 State Film Awards, with 11 specifically from Kerala. Despite such widespread recognition, she notably declined the Padma Bhushan in 2013, citing that the honor arrived too late and that South Indian artists often received inadequate acknowledgment. Janaki’s final recording was the poignant Malayalam lullaby “Amma Poovinum” in 2016, a symbolic farewell to an art form she enriched for decades. She passed away on July 11, 2026, in Mysuru, leaving behind a timeless repertoire that continues to resonate deeply with generations of music lovers.
