Biography
Rajeev Alunkal is a highly esteemed Indian poet, lyricist, music director, and orator, primarily recognized for his profound contributions to Malayalam cinema and literature. Born on August 17, 1973, in Alappuzha, Kerala, he embarked on his creative journey at an early age, publishing his first poem at 14 and becoming a professional lyricist for drama in 1994. Alunkal made his significant entry into the Malayalam film industry in 2003 with the movie “Hariharanpillai Happiyanu” and has since penned over 350 songs for approximately 130 films, in addition to contributing over 1000 songs to professional dramas and 2800 songs to various albums. He is particularly celebrated for his evocative lyrics that often explore romantic and philosophical themes.
Beyond his prolific lyrical work, Rajeev Alunkal holds significant positions within the cultural sphere, serving as the vice-chairman of MACTA (Malayalam Cine Technicians Association) and having previously chaired the Kumaranashan Smarakam. His distinguished career has been adorned with numerous accolades, including the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy Award for lifetime achievement as a lyricist in 2012, and multiple Kerala Film Critics Association Awards. Alunkal’s influence extends internationally, notably through his collaboration with A.R. Rahman on the “One Love” album and the release of his poem “Theresamma” by Pope Francis at the Vatican. He is also a motivational speaker and has authored several books, further solidifying his standing as a versatile and impactful artistic personality.
