Biography
Ottaplakkal Neelakandan Velu Kurup, popularly known as O. N. V. Kurup or simply O. N. V., was a renowned Malayalam poet and lyricist from Kerala, India. Born on May 27, 1931, in Chavara, Kollam district, he became one of the most celebrated figures in Malayalam literature. His poetic works are marked by their profound humanism, progressive ideology, and deep connection to Kerala’s cultural ethos. Throughout his illustrious career spanning over six decades, O. N. V. enriched Malayalam poetry and cinema with his exceptional literary contributions.
O. N. V. Kurup’s achievements in literature earned him the highest accolades in Indian arts and letters. He was awarded the Jnanpith Award in 2007, India’s highest literary honor, recognizing his lifetime contribution to Indian literature. The Government of India honored him with Padma Shri in 1998 and Padma Vibhushan in 2011, the fourth and second highest civilian awards respectively. He also received numerous state and national awards including the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award multiple times, Vayalar Award, Odakkuzhal Award, and Ezhuthachan Puraskaram. As a lyricist, he penned over 1,500 songs for Malayalam cinema, many of which became timeless classics.
Beyond his literary achievements, O. N. V. was known for his strong leftist political ideology and social commitment. He was actively involved in the progressive cultural movement in Kerala and was a former leader of the All India Students Federation (AISF). His poetry often reflected themes of social justice, human dignity, and resistance against oppression. He served as the chairman of Kerala Kalamandalam and made significant contributions to preserving and promoting Kerala’s traditional art forms. O. N. V. Kurup passed away on February 13, 2016, leaving behind a monumental legacy that continues to inspire generations of writers, artists, and social activists.
