N Lathika, popularly known as Lathika Teacher, is a noted Indian playback singer whose voice became an integral part of Malayalam cinema from the late 1970s through the 1990s. Born in Kollam to Sadasivan Bhagavatham and Nalini, she grew up in a strongly musical environment that nurtured her early interest in classical and light music. Trained in Carnatic music, she later deepened her grounding by studying at the Madras Music Academy, giving her a solid classical base that informed her film and devotional singing. Over the years, this combination of traditional training and natural emotive power gave her a distinct place among Malayalam playback singers.

Lathika began singing publicly as a child, performing at temple functions and ganamelas before moving into the professional concert circuit. Her entry into cinema came remarkably early: at around sixteen, she recorded the duet “Pushpathalpathil” for the film Abhinandanam (1976) with K J Yesudas, composed by Kannur Rajan. This debut not only introduced her to film audiences but also positioned her alongside some of the most respected musicians of the era. From there, she steadily built a career that bridged stage concerts, classical performances, and film playback work.

Her film career spans over 300 Malayalam and Tamil movies, with songs that remain popular decades after their release. Among her most remembered Malayalam numbers are “Kathodu Kathoram…,” “Devadoothar Padi…,” and “Poo Venam Pooppada Venam…” from the film Kathodu Kathoram, “Poo Venam Pooppada Venam…” from Oru Minnaminunginte Nurunguvettam, and “Tharum Thalirum…” from Chilambu. She also rendered many melodic solos and duets such as “Adharam Pakarum…,” “Ponpularoli Poovithariya…,” and “Nilaavinte Poonkaavil…,” working with major composers including Raveendran, Johnson, Shyam, M K Arjunan, K Raghavan, and S P Venkatesh. These songs showcased her ability to move seamlessly between soft romantic pieces, semi-classical compositions, and emotionally intense background vocals.

Parallel to her film work, Lathika maintained a strong presence in the concert and teaching world, which earned her the affectionate title “Lathika Teacher.” After honing her skills in Chennai’s concert circuit—often sharing the stage with legendary singers such as P B Sreenivas, T M Soundararajan, and Malaysia Vasudevan—she joined Swathi Thirunal College of Music in 1989 and later served for about 18 years at the Chembai Memorial Government Music College in Palakkad. In these roles she trained many young singers, passing on classical foundations, film repertoire nuances, and performance discipline. Her dual identity as performer and teacher strengthened her reputation within Kerala’s music community.

Even today, Lathika is remembered as a “forgotten hummingbird” whose voice quietly defined the emotional landscape of many classic Malayalam films, especially those featuring intense, introspective moments. Though she may not have always been in the limelight, her songs continue to be rediscovered through digital platforms and television re-runs, introducing new generations to her work. For many listeners, her voice carries a nostalgic warmth that instantly evokes the golden era of 1980s and 1990s Malayalam cinema.
