## M. G. Sreekumar: The Versatile Maestro of Malayalam Music
M. G. Sreekumar, born Malabar Gopalan Nair Sreekumar on 25 May 1957 in Haripad, Alappuzha, Kerala, is a renowned Indian playback singer, music composer, and television presenter, celebrated for his extensive and influential contributions to Malayalam cinema. His family boasts a rich musical heritage: his father, Gopalan Nair, was a respected singer, his elder brother M. G. Radhakrishnan was an acclaimed music director and Carnatic musician, and his sister K. Omanakutty is a noted classical vocalist and educator. Sreekumar initially worked at the State Bank of Travancore and spent time in the Middle East before pursuing his passion for music full-time.
He launched his professional singing career in the early 1980s, initially accompanying his brother at Carnatic concerts and later making his playback singing debut with the Malayalam film Poochakkoru Mookkuthi (1984). Sreekumar’s breakthrough came with the film Chithram (1988), in which he sang all the songs, marking a long-standing collaboration with composer-director Priyadarshan and actor Mohanlal. Over his illustrious career spanning more than four decades, he has recorded over 3,000 songs in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, and Sanskrit. Beyond playback singing, Sreekumar has composed music for notable Malayalam films such as Chathurangam, Thandavam, and Kanchivaram, and founded the music company KMG Musics and the Saregama School of Music in Thiruvananthapuram.
Sreekumar’s artistry has earned him two National Film Awards, three Kerala State Film Awards, five Filmfare Awards South, and the prestigious Harivarasanam Award in 2016. He is also a familiar face on Malayalam television, having hosted and judged major reality shows like SaReGaMa, Idea Star Singer, and Top Singer. His appointment as chairman of the Kerala Sangeeta Nataka Akademi in 2024 reflected his standing in the cultural landscape, even as it sparked political debate. Sreekumar remains an enduring and inspirational figure in Indian music, noted for his versatility, warmth, and deep connection with audiences across generations.
