MG Radhakrishnan എം ജി രാധാകൃഷ്ണന്‍

Malabar Gopalan Nair Radhakrishnan (M. G. Radhakrishnan) was a highly respected Indian music director and Carnatic vocalist from Kerala, known for his significant contributions to Malayalam film and light music. Born on July 29, 1940, in Haripad, Alappuzha district, he hailed from a family deeply rooted in music. His father, Malabar Gopalan Nair, was a music composer and harmonist, and his mother, Kamalakshi Amma, was a Harikatha exponent. Radhakrishnan pursued his musical education at S. D. College, Alappuzha, and earned his Ganabhooshanam from Swathi Thirunal College of Music, where he was a classmate of renowned singer K. J. Yesudas. His musical talent extended to his siblings, with his younger brother, M. G. Sreekumar, becoming a prominent playback singer, and his younger sister, K. Omanakutty, a distinguished Carnatic vocalist and academician.

M. G. Radhakrishnan’s career was marked by his versatile talent and dedication to music. He joined All India Radio (Akashvani, Trivandrum) in 1962 as a music composer, eventually rising to the position of senior music composer. He made his debut as a playback singer in the 1969 film “Kallichellamma” and later ventured into film music direction. He is credited with introducing playback singer K. S. Chithra to the film and music industry. Radhakrishnan’s compositions, particularly in light music, garnered widespread acclaim. He received the Kerala State Film Award for Best Music Director twice, for the films “Achaneyaanenikkishtam” in 2001 and “Ananthabadram” in 2005. He passed away on July 2, 2010, at the age of 69, due to liver disease, leaving behind a rich musical legacy.

പ്രധാനമായും ഒരു ഗായകനായും സംഗീതസംവിധായകനായും അറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന മലബാർ ഗോപാലൻ നായർ രാധാകൃഷ്ണൻ (എം.ജി. രാധാകൃഷ്ണൻ) കേരളത്തിൽ നിന്നുള്ള പ്രഗത്ഭനായ ഒരു സംഗീത സംവിധായകനും കർണ്ണാടക സംഗീതജ്ഞനുമായിരുന്നു. മലയാള ചലച്ചിത്ര സംഗീതത്തിനും ലളിതഗാനങ്ങൾക്കും അദ്ദേഹം ഗണ്യമായ സംഭാവനകൾ നൽകി. 1940 ജൂലൈ 29-ന് ആലപ്പുഴ ജില്ലയിലെ ഹരിപ്പാടാണ് അദ്ദേഹം ജനിച്ചത്. സംഗീതജ്ഞനായ പിതാവ് മലബാർ ഗോപാലൻ നായരുടെയും ഹരികഥാ പ്രഭാഷകയായ മാതാവ് കമലാക്ഷി അമ്മയുടെയും മൂത്ത മകനായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹം. ആലപ്പുഴയിലെ എസ്.ഡി. കോളേജിൽ നിന്ന് വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം നേടിയ രാധാകൃഷ്ണൻ സ്വാതി തിരുനാൾ സംഗീത കോളേജിൽ നിന്ന് ഗാനഭൂഷണം നേടി. പ്രമുഖ ഗായകൻ കെ.ജെ. യേശുദാസ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സഹപാഠിയായിരുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഇളയ സഹോദരൻ എം.ജി. ശ്രീകുമാർ ഒരു പ്രമുഖ പിന്നണി ഗായകനാണ്, ഇളയ സഹോദരി കെ. ഓമനക്കുട്ടി ഒരു പ്രശസ്ത കർണ്ണാടക സംഗീതജ്ഞയും അക്കാദമിഷ്യനുമാണ്.

എം.ജി. രാധാകൃഷ്ണന്റെ സംഗീത ജീവിതം അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ബഹുമുഖ പ്രതിഭയാലും സംഗീതത്തോടുള്ള അർപ്പണബോധത്താലും ശ്രദ്ധേയമായിരുന്നു. 1962-ൽ ആകാശവാണിയിൽ (തിരുവനന്തപുരം) സംഗീതസംവിധായകനായി ചേർന്ന അദ്ദേഹം പിന്നീട് സീനിയർ മ്യൂസിക് കമ്പോസർ പദവിയിലെത്തി. 1969-ൽ പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയ ‘കല്ലിച്ചെല്ലമ്മ’ എന്ന ചിത്രത്തിലൂടെ പിന്നണി ഗായകനായി അരങ്ങേറ്റം കുറിച്ച അദ്ദേഹം പിന്നീട് ചലച്ചിത്ര സംഗീത സംവിധാന രംഗത്തും സജീവമായി. പിന്നണി ഗായിക കെ.എസ്. ചിത്രയെ ചലച്ചിത്ര-സംഗീത ലോകത്തിന് പരിചയപ്പെടുത്തിയത് അദ്ദേഹമാണ്. രാധാകൃഷ്ണന്റെ ഗാനങ്ങൾ, പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് ലളിതഗാനങ്ങൾ, വലിയ ജനപ്രീതി നേടി. ‘അച്ഛനെയെനിക്കിഷ്ടം’ (2001), ‘ആനന്ദഭദ്രം’ (2005) എന്നീ ചിത്രങ്ങളിലെ സംഗീതത്തിന് രണ്ട് തവണ മികച്ച സംഗീത സംവിധായകനുള്ള കേരള സംസ്ഥാന ചലച്ചിത്ര അവാർഡ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ലഭിച്ചു. 2010 ജൂലൈ 2-ന് 69-ആം വയസ്സിൽ കരൾ രോഗത്തെത്തുടർന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം അന്തരിച്ചു.
