MB Sreenivasan എം ബി ശ്രീനിവാസന്‍

Manamadurai Balakrishnan Sreenivasan, popularly known as M.B. Sreenivasan or MBS, was a distinguished South Indian music director and composer. Born on September 19, 1925, in Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh, he primarily left his indelible mark on the Malayalam and Tamil film industries. His musical style was characterized by minimal orchestration and a profound simplicity, making his compositions remarkably lucid and appealing. Beyond film scores, MBS was a visionary, instrumental in establishing the Madras Youth Choir in 1971, dedicated to Indian choral music. A staunch believer in responsible unionism, he was also the architect of the Cine Musicians’ Union in Madras, advocating for timely payments and fair working conditions for musicians. Notably, he is credited with introducing the legendary singer K. J. Yesudas to the film industry, a contribution that profoundly shaped Malayalam cinema.

M.B. Sreenivasan’s influence extended beyond music direction; he was also an active participant in social and political movements. During his college days at Madras Presidency College, he was deeply attracted to Marxist principles and became a full-time member of the Communist Party, serving as the Secretary of the All India Students’ Federation. He also played a significant role in the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA). His commitment to using music for national integration and instilling patriotic values in children led to his pioneering work in choral music. His artistic versatility was further demonstrated by his acting role in the critically acclaimed Tamil film ‘Agraharathil Kazhutai’. M.B. Sreenivasan passed away suddenly from a heart attack on March 9, 1988, while conducting a choir workshop in the Lakshadweep islands, leaving behind a rich legacy of musical innovation and social consciousness.

എം.ബി. ശ്രീനിവാസൻ്റെ സ്വാധീനം സംഗീത സംവിധാനത്തിനപ്പുറം സാമൂഹിക-രാഷ്ട്രീയ മേഖലകളിലേക്കും വ്യാപിച്ചു. മദ്രാസ് പ്രസിഡൻസി കോളേജിലെ പഠനകാലത്ത് മാർക്സിയൻ ആശയങ്ങളിൽ ആകൃഷ്ടനായി അദ്ദേഹം കമ്മ്യൂണിസ്റ്റ് പാർട്ടിയിൽ സജീവ അംഗമായി മാറുകയും ഓൾ ഇന്ത്യ സ്റ്റുഡൻ്റ്സ് ഫെഡറേഷൻ്റെ സെക്രട്ടറിയായി പ്രവർത്തിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഇന്ത്യൻ പീപ്പിൾസ് തിയേറ്റർ അസോസിയേഷനിലും (IPTA) അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് പ്രധാന പങ്കുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ദേശീയോദ്ഗ്രഥനത്തിനും കുട്ടികളിൽ ദേശസ്നേഹം വളർത്തുന്നതിനും സംഗീതം ഒരു ഉപാധിയായി ഉപയോഗിക്കണമെന്ന അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻ്റെ കാഴ്ചപ്പാട് കോറൽ സംഗീത രംഗത്ത് വിപ്ലവം സൃഷ്ടിച്ചു. ‘അഗ്രഹാരത്തിൽ കഴുതൈ’ എന്ന നിരൂപക പ്രശംസ നേടിയ തമിഴ് ചിത്രത്തിൽ അഭിനയിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് അദ്ദേഹം തൻ്റെ കലാപരമായ ബഹുമുഖ പ്രതിഭ തെളിയിച്ചു. 1988 മാർച്ച് 9-ന് ലക്ഷദ്വീപിൽ ഒരു ക്വയർ വർക്ക്‌ഷോപ്പ് നയിക്കുന്നതിനിടെയുണ്ടായ ഹൃദയാഘാതത്തെത്തുടർന്ന് എം.ബി. ശ്രീനിവാസൻ അന്തരിച്ചു.
