Biography
## Manjari: A Versatile Voice in Malayalam Cinema
Manjari is a renowned Indian playback singer and Hindustani vocalist who has established herself as one of the most distinctive voices in Malayalam cinema and classical music. Born on April 17, 1986, in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, she grew up in Muscat, Oman, where her family is originally from Kannur. Her journey from a rock band performer in her school days to becoming an award-winning playback singer exemplifies her remarkable versatility and dedication to music.
Manjari’s entry into the film industry came through legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja, who introduced her to the world of playback singing in 2005 with the film Achuvinte Amma, directed by Sathyan Anthikad. She made an impressive debut by singing two songs – a duet ‘Swasathin Thalam’ with the legendary Dr. K.J. Yesudas and a solo ‘Tamarakuruvikku’. This breakthrough marked the beginning of a prolific career that has seen her collaborate with prominent composers including Ramesh Narayan, M.G. Radhakrishnan, Vidyasagar, M. Jayachandran, Ouseppachan, and the late Raveendran Master. Her discography now includes over 300 songs across Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, and Telugu films, establishing her as a significant voice in South Indian cinema.
Beyond playback singing, Manjari has carved a unique niche for herself as a ghazal singer and classical music performer. She won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Female Singer twice – first in 2004 for ‘Mukilin Makale’ from the film Makalkku, and again in 2008 for ‘Mullulla Murikkinmel’ from Vilapangalkappuram. Her most prestigious recognition came in 2016 when she became the youngest Indian and the only Indian recipient that year to win the Sahir and Adeeb International Award for her contribution to Urdu literature and promoting ghazals. This award, previously won by stalwarts like Gulzar, Javed Akhtar, and Shabana Azmi, underscored her exceptional talent in classical and ghazal music. Currently pursuing advanced studies in Hindustani Classical Music under Pandit Ramesh Julé of the Kirana Gharana, Manjari continues to perform worldwide through her own band for ghazal concerts while also hosting the popular ghazal show ‘Khayal’ on television. In her personal life, she married her childhood friend Jerin in an intimate ceremony in Thiruvananthapuram in June 2022.
