Biography
Madhu Balakrishnan is a renowned playback singer from Kerala who has established himself as one of South India’s leading vocalists across multiple film industries. Born in Paravur, Ernakulam district, Madhu’s musical journey began during his training at the Academy of Indian Music and Arts in Chennai, where he received guidance from the legendary Padma Bhushan T. Balakrishnan. His foray into playback singing started unexpectedly in 1995 when Tamil composer Shaan offered him an opportunity, though his formal entry into Malayalam cinema came around 1999.
Madhu’s breakthrough moment arrived in 2002 with the iconic Malayalam song “Amme Amme” from the film Vaalkannadi, composed by M. Jayachandran. This powerful and poignant rendition earned him a Kerala State Film Award for Best Playback Singer and firmly established his credentials in the Malayalam film music industry. Building on this success, he gained recognition for other acclaimed Malayalam numbers including “Raveerayai poove” from Rock and Roll and “Ramayanam katha” from Pathaam nilayile theevandi, which won him an Asianet award and multiple Kerala Film Critics awards respectively.
Beyond Malayalam cinema, Madhu achieved significant recognition in Tamil films following his 2003 breakthrough with “Kanaa kandeinadee thozhi” from Parthiban kanavu, composed by Vidyasagar. He later became the voice of Superstar Rajinikanth in the chartbuster duet “Konja neram konja neram” with Asha Bhosle from Chandramukhi. His versatility extended to films such as Pithamagan, Mozhi, Abhiyum naanum, and Naan mahaan alla. Madhu’s achievements in Tamil cinema culminated in a Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Playback Singer in 2006 and the prestigious “Kalaimamani” title in 2007, recognizing his artistic excellence. With a career spanning over 25 years, Madhu has sung more than 1,000 film songs in multiple languages including Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, and Tulu, earning him widespread acclaim and numerous accolades across the Indian film industry.
