Biography ജീവചരിത്രം

K. J. Yesudas, born Kattassery Joseph Yesudas on January 10, 1940, in Fort Kochi, Kerala, is an
iconic Indian playback singer and musician celebrated for his mastery of Indian classical,
devotional, and film music. Often called “Gaanagandharvan” The Celestial Singer), Yesudas is
widely regarded as one of the greatest voices in Indian music history, with a career spanning
over six decades. He has recorded more than 50,000 songs in a remarkable array of languages,
including Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, Telugu, Bengali, and even non-Indian languages
such as Russian, Arabic, Latin, and English.

Yesudas began his musical journey under the guidance of his father, Augustine Joseph, a
respected classical musician and stage actor. He further trained in Carnatic music at the Swathi
Thirunal College of Music and under maestros like Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar, also
mastering Hindustani music . His playback singing debut came in the early 1960s, and he
quickly rose to prominence, becoming the voice of leading actors across South Indian cinema
and later Bollywood. His versatility, ability to render both classical and popular songs, and his
soulful renditions have earned him a devoted fan base and numerous accolades, including seven
National Film Awards for Best Male Playback Singer-a record in the Indian music industry.

Beyond his musical achievements, Yesudas has played a significant role as a cultural
ambassador for India, performing in major cities worldwide and promoting Indian music on global
platforms. He has been honored with prestigious awards such as the Padma Shri, Padma
Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan for his contributions to music and culture. Yesudas is
also known for his commitment to social harmony, inspired by the teachings of Sree Narayana
Guru, and his belief in music as a unifying force. His legacy continues through his recordings, live
performances, and the influence he has had on generations of musicians and music lovers.
