Kannur Rajan കണ്ണൂര്‍ രാജന്‍

Kannur Rajan (June 24, 1940 – April 7, 1995) was a highly respected Indian music composer, primarily known for his evocative and nostalgic contributions to Malayalam cinema. Born in Kakkad, a village near Kannur in British India, Rajan came from a modest background. He began his musical journey as a casual artist at All India Radio in Kozhikode, where he gained foundational experience blending traditional Kerala musical elements with contemporary arrangements. His official debut in the Malayalam film industry as a music director was with the 1974 film ‘Mister Sundari’. Over a career spanning more than two decades, he composed for approximately 50 films, collaborating with prominent lyricists and singers, most notably K. J. Yesudas, who lent his voice to many of Rajan’s 185 recorded songs.

Despite a relatively modest output in terms of film count, Kannur Rajan’s compositions earned immense nostalgic value, celebrated for their emotional sincerity and melodic warmth. His notable works include the soundtracks for films like ‘Chithram’ (1988) and ‘Ninnishtam Ennishtam’ (1986). Beyond cinema, he also composed for non-film albums such as ‘Hridayanjali’ (1983) and devotional works like ‘Krishnanamam’ (1995). Rajan was married twice and was the father-in-law of acclaimed singer and composer Sharreth. Tragically, he passed away from a heart attack in Chennai on April 7, 1995, at the age of 54, while finalizing the score for his last film, ‘Kokkarakko’ (1995), leaving behind an enduring legacy in Malayalam music.

മലയാളചലച്ചിത്രലോകത്തെ ഒരു പ്രമുഖ സംഗീതസംവിധായകനായിരുന്നു കണ്ണൂർ രാജൻ (ജൂൺ 24, 1940 – ഏപ്രിൽ 7, 1995). ഗൃഹാതുരത്വം ഉണർത്തുന്ന നിരവധി ഗാനങ്ങൾ മലയാള ചലച്ചിത്ര സംഗീത ശാഖയ്ക്ക് അദ്ദേഹം സംഭാവന ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഇന്ത്യയിലെ കണ്ണൂരിനടുത്തുള്ള കാക്കാട് എന്ന ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ ഒരു സാധാരണ കുടുംബത്തിലാണ് അദ്ദേഹം ജനിച്ചത്. കോഴിക്കോട്ടെ ആകാശവാണിയിൽ ഒരു കാഷ്വൽ ആർട്ടിസ്റ്റായിട്ടാണ് രാജൻ തന്റെ സംഗീത ജീവിതം ആരംഭിച്ചത്. പരമ്പരാഗത കേരളീയ സംഗീത ഘടകങ്ങളെ സമകാലിക ചിട്ടപ്പെടുത്തലുകളുമായി സമന്വയിപ്പിച്ച് അദ്ദേഹം അടിസ്ഥാനപരമായ അനുഭവം നേടി. 1974-ൽ പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയ ‘മിസ്റ്റർ സുന്ദരി’ എന്ന ചിത്രത്തിലൂടെയാണ് അദ്ദേഹം മലയാള സിനിമയിൽ സംഗീതസംവിധായകനായി അരങ്ങേറ്റം കുറിച്ചത്.

രണ്ട് പതിറ്റാണ്ടിലേറെ നീണ്ട സംഗീത ജീവിതത്തിൽ, ഏകദേശം 50-ഓളം ചിത്രങ്ങൾക്ക് അദ്ദേഹം സംഗീതം നൽകി. വയലാർ രാമവർമ്മ, ശ്രീകുമാരൻ തമ്പി തുടങ്ങിയ പ്രമുഖ ഗാനരചയിതാക്കളോടും കെ. ജെ. യേശുദാസ് പോലുള്ള ഗായകരോടും ചേർന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം പ്രവർത്തിച്ചു. ‘ചിത്രം’ (1988), ‘നിന്നിഷ്ടം എന്നിഷ്ടം’ (1986) തുടങ്ങിയ ചിത്രങ്ങളിലെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഗാനങ്ങൾ ഏറെ ശ്രദ്ധിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. ചലച്ചിത്രങ്ങൾക്ക് പുറമെ, ‘ഹൃദയാഞ്ജലി’ (1983), ‘കൃഷ്ണനാമം’ (1995) തുടങ്ങിയ ആൽബങ്ങൾക്കും ഭക്തിഗാനങ്ങൾക്കും അദ്ദേഹം സംഗീതം പകർന്നു. പ്രമുഖ സംഗീതസംവിധായകനും ഗായകനുമായ ശരത്തിന്റെ ഭാര്യാപിതാവായിരുന്നു കണ്ണൂർ രാജൻ. 1995 ഏപ്രിൽ 7-ന് ചെന്നൈയിൽ വെച്ച്, ‘കൊക്കരക്കോ’ എന്ന തന്റെ അവസാന ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ സംഗീത ജോലികൾ പൂർത്തിയാക്കുന്നതിനിടെ ഹൃദയാഘാതത്തെ തുടർന്ന് 54-ആം വയസ്സിൽ അദ്ദേഹം അന്തരിച്ചു.
