## From Rickshaw to Red Carpet: The Kalabhavan Mani Story
Kalabhavan Mani, born Kunnisseri Veettil Raman Mani on 1 January 1971 in Chalakudy, Kerala, rose from driving an autorickshaw to becoming a beloved entertainer. He first honed his craft as a mimicry artist with the famed Kalabhavan troupe, where his earthy humour and booming folk voice caught filmmakers’ attention. Small comic parts in the mid-1990s quickly led to meatier roles, and by the end of the decade he was a regular presence on Malayalam screens, admired for the ease with which he could pivot between slapstick and pathos.
Across a 25-year career Mani appeared in more than 250 films spanning Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada. His breakthrough performance as the blind street singer Ramu in Vasanthiyum Lakshmiyum Pinne Njaanum (1999) earned both the National Film Award (Special Jury) and the Kerala State Award, a first for a Malayalam actor in that category. He later became a sought-after antagonist in Tamil hits such as Gemini (2002), while simultaneously releasing hugely popular folk and playback tracks—his songs still draw over a million monthly listeners on streaming platforms. Mani’s ability to embody the common man, the villain and the balladeer made him a unique fixture in southern Indian cinema.
On 6 March 2016 the actor died in Kochi, aged forty-five, triggering rumours of foul play because toxic traces were found in his body. A CBI investigation later ruled out homicide, concluding that chronic liver disease worsened by heavy alcohol intake was the decisive cause of death. In the years since, his colleagues and fans have kept his memory alive through tributes, stage shows and the annual Kalabhavan Mani Memorial Awards, whose 2025 edition honoured actor-director Mohanlal. Mani remains celebrated as an artist who carried the rhythms of Kerala’s folk culture onto mainstream screens while proving that talent can spring from the most ordinary beginnings.
