K Jayakumar: The Polymath Poet and Pillar of Malayalam Arts

K Jayakumar, born on October 6, 1952, in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, is a prolific Indian civil servant, poet, author, and artist whose impact spans both the realms of administration and creative arts. He is the son of celebrated film director M. Krishnan Nair, which influenced his early gravitation toward literature and culture. Jayakumar joined the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1978, and his illustrious career saw him serve as District Collector of Kozhikode, Secretary of Tourism and Culture, and culminated as Chief Secretary of Kerala in 2012. After his retirement, he became the founding Vice Chancellor of Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam University and currently serves as the managing director of the Institute of Management in Kerala.

Jayakumar’s artistic pursuits are equally distinguished. He is a celebrated Malayalam poet and lyricist, known for penning memorable songs for Malayalam cinema and publishing several acclaimed collections of poetry. കെ ജയകുമാർ 1952 ഒക്‌റ്റോബർ 6-ന് തിരുവനന്തപുരം ജില്ലയിൽ ജനിച്ചു. ജോലിയിൽ ഇന്ത്യൻ ഭരണസേവനത്തിലെ (IAS) ഉന്നതപദവികളിൽ നിന്ന് ഇടവിട്ട്, അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ജീവിതം സാഹിത്യത്തിലേക്കും കലയിലേക്കും സമന്വയിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിൽ ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണ്. പ്രശസ്ത സംവിധായകൻ എം കൃഷ്ണൻ നായരുടെ മകനായതിനാൽ, ബാല്യകാലം മുതൽ തന്നെ സാഹിത്യ സാംസ്കാരിക രംഗങ്ങളോട് അടുപ്പം പുലർത്തി. കോഴിക്കോട് ജില്ലാ കളക്ടർ, ടൂറിസം-സാംസ്കാരിക സെക്രട്ടറി, കേരളാ ചീഫ് സെക്രട്ടറി തുടങ്ങി പല ഉന്നത സ്ഥാനങ്ങളിലും സേവനം അനുഷ്ഠിച്ചാണ് അദ്ദേഹം വിരമിച്ചത്. വിരമിച്ച ശേഷം, തുഞ്ചത്ത് എഴുത്തച്ഛൻ മലയാളം യൂണിവേഴ്‌സിറ്റിയുടെ ആദ്യ വൈസ് ചാൻസലറായും പിന്നീട് ഇൻസ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ട് ഓഫ് മാനേജ്മെന്റ് ഇൻ കേരളയുടെ മാനേജിംഗ് ഡയറക്ടറായും പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നു.

സാഹിത്യ-കലാരംഗങ്ങളിൽ കെ ജയകുമാർക്ക് തുല്യപ്രതിഭയുണ്ട്. ശ്രദ്ധേയമായ കവിതാസമാഹാരങ്ങൾ, മലയാള സിനിമയ്ക്ക് രചിച്ച അമരഗാനങ്ങൾ, പ്രശസ്ത ആമുഖങ്ങൾ എന്നിവയിലൂടെ അദ്ദേഹം അക്കാലഘട്ടത്തിന്റെ ശ്രദ്ധ പിടിച്ചു പിടിച്ചു. 2024-ൽ കെന്ദ്ര സാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി പുരസ്‌കാരം നേടിയ ‘പിംഗളകേശിനി’ എന്ന തന്റെ കവിതാസമാഹാരം സമൂഹത്തിലെ മൂല്യ കൂടുതൽ നിരാശയും ആത്മപരിശോധനയും ഉണർത്തുന്ന ഒരു കൃതിയായി അംഗീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. റബിന്ദ്രനാഥ് ടാഗോർ, ഖലീൽ ജിബ്രാൻ തുടങ്ങിയവരുടെ കൃതികൾ മലയാളത്തിലേക്ക് വിവർത്തനം ചെയ്തതോടുകൂടി, ചിത ചിത്രകാരനും തിരക്കഥാകൃത്തുമാണ് ജയകുമാർ.
