G. Venugopal is a renowned playback singer from Kerala, celebrated for his mellifluous voice and rich contribution to Malayalam cinema and music over the past four decades. Born on December 10, 1960, in Thattathumala near Kilimanoor, he began his career with the film “Odaruthammava Aalariyam” in 1984 and quickly gained popularity with memorable songs like “Poomaname” from Nirakkoottu and “Unarumee Gaanam” from Moonnam Pakkam. Venugopal has sung in more than 400 films and recorded over 500 private albums, earning multiple Kerala State Film Awards for Best Male Playback Singer and other prestigious honors in recognition of his artistry.

Music runs deep in Venugopal’s family; his mother Sarojini was a music educator, and his maternal aunts—the Parur sisters K. Sharadamani and K. Radhamani—were acclaimed Carnatic musicians. He is related to several notable singers, including his cousins Sujatha Mohan and Radhika Thilak, and his niece Shweta Mohan, who have themselves contributed significantly to Indian playback singing. Venugopal credits his mentors, including Sherthalla Gopalan Nair and Mangad Nadesan, for shaping his classical musical foundation.

Beyond playback singing, Venugopal has performed across genres including dramas, poetry, and television music, and has composed for projects like Sugathakumari’s World Environment Day poem for Kerala Government. കേരളത്തിലെ പ്രശസ്ത പിന്നണി ഗായകനാണ് ജി. വേണുഗോപാൽ. കഴിഞ്ഞ നാല് പതിറ്റാണ്ടുകളായി മലയാള സിനിമയ്ക്കും സംഗീതത്തിനും അദ്ദേഹം നൽകിയ സംഭാവനകൾ ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണ്. 1960 ഡിസംബർ 10-ന് കിളിമാനൂരിനടുത്ത് തട്ടത്തുമലയിൽ ജനിച്ച അദ്ദേഹം, 1984-ൽ “ഓടരുതമ്മാവാ ആളറിയാം” എന്ന ചിത്രത്തിലൂടെയാണ് തന്റെ സംഗീത ജീവിതം ആരംഭിച്ചത്. നിറക്കൂട്ടിലെ “പൂമാനമേ”, മൂന്നാം പക്കത്തിലെ “ഉണരുമീ ഗാനം” തുടങ്ങിയ ഗാനങ്ങളിലൂടെ അദ്ദേഹം പെട്ടെന്ന് പ്രശസ്തി നേടി. 400-ൽ അധികം സിനിമകളിൽ പാടുകയും 500-ൽ അധികം സ്വകാര്യ ആൽബങ്ങൾ റെക്കോർഡ് ചെയ്യുകയും ചെയ്ത വേണുഗോപാൽ, മികച്ച പിന്നണി ഗായകനുള്ള നിരവധി കേരള സംസ്ഥാന ചലച്ചിത്ര അവാർഡുകളും മറ്റ് നിരവധി ബഹുമതികളും നേടിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.

വേണുഗോപാലിന്റെ കുടുംബത്തിൽ സംഗീതം അലിഞ്ഞുചേർന്നിരിക്കുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ അമ്മ സരോജിനി ഒരു സംഗീത അദ്ധ്യാപികയായിരുന്നു. മാതൃസഹോദരിമാരായ പാറൂർ സഹോദരിമാർ കെ. ശാരദാമണി, കെ. രാധാമണി എന്നിവർ പ്രശസ്ത കർണ്ണാടക സംഗീതജ്ഞരായിരുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ കസിൻസായ സുജാത മോഹൻ, രാധികാ തിലക്, മരുമകൾ ശ്വേതാ മോഹൻ എന്നിവർ ഉൾപ്പെടെയുള്ള പ്രമുഖ ഗായകരുമായി അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് കുടുംബബന്ധമുണ്ട്. ശാസ്ത്രീയ സംഗീതത്തിൽ തനിക്ക് അടിത്തറ നൽകിയതിന് ചെർത്തല ഗോപാലൻ നായർ, മാങ്ങാട് നടേശൻ എന്നിവരുൾപ്പെടെയുള്ള ഗുരുക്കന്മാരെ വേണുഗോപാൽ കടപ്പാടോടെ ഓർക്കുന്നു.

പിന്നണി ഗാനങ്ങൾക്ക് പുറമെ, നാടകങ്ങൾ, കവിതകൾ, ടെലിവിഷൻ സംഗീതം തുടങ്ങിയ വിവിധ ഗാനശാഖകളിലും വേണുഗോപാൽ തന്റെ കഴിവ് തെളിയിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. കേരള സർക്കാരിനുവേണ്ടി സുഗതകുമാരിയുടെ ലോക പരിസ്ഥിതി ദിന കവിതയ്ക്ക് അദ്ദേഹം സംഗീതം നൽകി. ജനപ്രിയ ടിവി സംഗീത മത്സരങ്ങളിൽ വിധികർത്താവായും അദ്ദേഹം പ്രവർത്തിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ലാളിത്യവും വിനയവും അടുത്തിടെ മരണവാർത്തയെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള തമാശ രൂപേണയുള്ള മറുപടിയിൽ വീണ്ടും ശ്രദ്ധ നേടി. 1990-ൽ രശ്മിയെ വിവാഹം കഴിച്ച അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് രണ്ട് മക്കളുണ്ട്. മകൻ അരവിന്ദും സംഗീത ലോകത്ത് സജീവമാണ്.
