Biography
G Devarajan (1927-2006), known as G Devarajan Master or Devarajan Master, was a legendary music composer who revolutionized Malayalam film music. Born on April 12, 1927, in Paravoor, Ernakulam district, Kerala, he began his musical journey at a young age, learning Carnatic music and mastering various instruments. His formal training in music combined with an innovative approach to composition made him one of the most influential figures in South Indian cinema.
Over his illustrious career spanning more than four decades, Devarajan composed music for over 300 Malayalam films, creating timeless melodies that remain popular even today. He was known for his ability to blend classical Carnatic music with folk traditions, creating a unique sound that appealed to both connoisseurs and common audiences. His collaborations with legendary lyricists like Vayalar Ramavarma and P Bhaskaran produced some of the most memorable songs in Malayalam cinema history. Notable films include Bharya, Chemmeen, Mudiyanaya Puthran, and Thacholi Othenan.
Devarajan received numerous accolades throughout his career, including multiple Kerala State Film Awards and the prestigious Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award. He was also honored with the Padma Shri in 1990 for his contributions to Indian music. His music school, which he established to train upcoming musicians, continues to preserve his legacy.
