Balachandran Chullikkad is celebrated as one of the most influential Malayalam literary figures and a unique presence in Indian parallel cinema. Born in Paravur, Ernakulam, Kerala, on July 30, 1957, he completed his graduation in English literature from Maharajas College, Ernakulam, after earlier studies at Union Christian College, Aluva. His early inclination towards poetry led him to become a renowned voice in Malayalam literature by the late 1970s, known for his striking modernist sensibility and participation in the literary avant-garde.

As a poet, Chullikkad’s published collections include “Pathinettu Kavithakal,” “Amaavaasi,” “Ghazal,” “Maanasaantharam,” and “Dracula.” His comprehensive anthology “Balachandran Chullikkadinte Kavithakal” brought together his poetic oeuvre, while his memoir “Chidambarasmarana” offered intimate insights into his life and creative journey. He has represented India on the global stage, notably as part of a cultural delegation to Sweden in 1997 and at the international book fair in Gothenburg. Chullikkad’s personal journey took a significant turn when he embraced Buddhism in 2000, reflecting a deep spiritual evolution that also marked his later works.

Chullikkad’s film career began with a landmark role in G. Aravindan’s “Pokkuveyil” (1981), establishing him as a sensitive screen presence. He went on to appear in several acclaimed Malayalam films such as “Rappakal,” “Parunthu,” “Action Hero Biju,” and “Welcome to Central Jail,” as well as numerous television serials. His narration in “18 Elephants – 3 Monologues” won him the National Film Award for Best Voice Over. ബാലചന്ദ്രൻ ചുള്ളിക്കാട്‌, 1957 ജൂലൈ 30-ന് എറണാകുളം ജില്ലയിലെ പാറാവൂരിൽ ജനിച്ചു. യുണിയൻ ക്രിസ്‌ച്യൻ കോളേജിലും പിന്നീട് എറണാകുളം മഹാരാജാസ് കോളേജിലുമാണ് ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് സാഹിത്യത്തിൽ ബിരുദം പൂർത്തിയാക്കിയത്. 1970കളിൽ തന്നെ സമകാലിക കവിതയുടെ മുഖ്യ പ്രതിനിധിയായി മലയാളം സാഹിത്യരംഗത്ത് സ്വപ്നം പകർന്നു. ആധുനികതയുടെ ശക്തമായ സ്വാധീനം കൊണ്ടു തന്നെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ കവിതകൾ ശ്രദ്ധേയമാകുന്നു.
