A. R. Rahman is an Indian composer, producer, and singer widely regarded as one of the most influential music creators in contemporary Indian and global cinema. He is often nicknamed the “Mozart of Madras” for his innovative blending of Indian classical, electronic, and world music.
Early life and background

Rahman was born A. S. Dileep Kumar on 6 January 1967 in Madras (now Chennai), Tamil Nadu, into a musically inclined family; his father R. K. Shekhar was a film music composer and arranger.

After his father’s early death, he worked as a session musician and played keyboards in various orchestras from a young age to support his family.

In 1988, his family converted to Islam, and he took the name Allah Rakha Rahman, which he uses professionally.
Breakthrough and film career

Rahman’s breakthrough came with Mani Ratnam’s Tamil film Roja (1992), whose soundtrack was a sensation and won him his first National Film Award for Best Music Direction.

He followed this with acclaimed scores for films like Bombay, Dil Se, Taal, Lagaan, Rang De Basanti, Jodhaa Akbar, Rockstar, and numerous Tamil hits, redefining the sound of Indian film music in the 1990s and 2000s.
