Alphonse Joseph: Pioneer of Spiritual and Cinematic Melodies in Malayalam Music
Alphonse Joseph is a prominent music director, composer, and playback singer celebrated for his innovative contributions to Indian cinema, especially Malayalam films. Born in Kaachery near Nadathara, Thrissur, Kerala, into a musically rich Christian family, Alphonse was introduced to music at an early age by his tablist-singer father and violinist uncle. He began his musical journey studying Carnatic music and later expanded into Western classical, earning notable academic accolades such as the Kala Prathibha award from Calicut University. He holds degrees in computer application from IGNOU and a Master’s in Music from Calicut University. His professional training includes accomplishments at London’s Trinity College of Music.
Alphonse co-founded Rexband, India’s pioneering contemporary gospel group, which gained international recognition by performing at six World Youth Day celebrations, including for the Pope. The band is celebrated for its unique fusion of Western, Carnatic, and Hindustani styles, reaching audiences worldwide. His musical vocation extends beyond gospel; he made his film debut as a composer with Vellithira (2003), which earned praise from legends like A. R. Rahman. Subsequent successes included hit soundtracks for Jalotsavam and Amal Neerad’s Big B, with memorable songs interpreted by singers like Shreya Ghoshal. As a vocalist, his performance of Aaromale in A.
