A. K. Lohithadas’s 2000 Malayalam satirical drama, “Joker,” unfolds within the vibrant yet struggling confines of Royal Circus, owned by Govindan. The narrative centers on Babu (Dileep), a skilled and devoted circus clown who harbors deep affection for Kamala (Manya), Govindan’s daughter, to whom he has been promised in marriage since childhood. The film delves into themes of unrequited love, personal sacrifice, and the precarious lives of itinerant performers, while also offering social commentary on class divides. “Joker” was well-received upon its release, lauded for A. K. Lohithadas’s nuanced direction and Dileep’s versatile performance as the titular clown, which effectively conveyed the emotional depth of a marginalized artist. Critics viewed it as a strong return to more accessible storytelling for Lohithadas. The movie achieved commercial success and garnered positive audience reception, reflected in its solid ratings on various platforms. Mohan Sithara also received the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director – Malayalam for the film’s soundtrack. Notably, “Joker” marked the final film appearance of veteran actor Bahadoor.
