Synopsis
“Ithu Nammude Kadha” (transl. This Is Our Story) is a 2011 Malayalam-language drama film directed by Rajesh Kannankara, marking his directorial debut. A faithful remake of the highly successful 2009 Tamil film “Naadodigal,” the movie transplants the original’s compelling narrative of friendship and sacrifice to the picturesque backwaters of Kuttanad. The plot centers on three inseparable friends—Vinod (Asif Ali), Santhosh (Nishan), and Kochumon (Abhishek)—each harboring simple dreams for their future. Vinod, a history graduate, strives for a government job to win his cousin Kalyani’s (Ananya) hand in marriage, while Santhosh envisions a computer training center and harbors a secret love for Vinod’s sister. Kochumon, meanwhile, yearns for a life abroad. Their lives take an unforeseen and tragic turn when they wholeheartedly commit to helping Vinod’s friend, Mahesh (Vineeth Kumar), elope with Aishwarya, the daughter of a powerful political rival. This act of friendship, though well-intentioned, plunges them into a vortex of violence, legal battles, and profound personal losses, including severe physical disabilities for some and shattered dreams for others.
Upon its release on January 28, 2011, “Ithu Nammude Kadha” received a mixed reception from critics. While many acknowledged director Rajesh Kannankara’s commendable effort in adapting the culturally specific “Madurai story” to a distinct Kerala setting, some reviews highlighted that it couldn’t quite replicate the raw sincerity and impact of the original “Naadodigal.” The performances of the lead cast, particularly Asif Ali, Nishan, debutant Abhishek, and Ananya (who reprised her role from the Tamil original), were generally lauded for their conviction. The film was praised for its technical aspects, especially Vipin Mohan’s cinematography, which beautifully captured the Kuttanad landscape. Despite carrying an appealing message about loyalty and the true essence of friendship in challenging times, the film reportedly underperformed commercially, partly attributed to limited publicity.
