Synopsis
“Ishtam” is a 2001 Indian Malayalam-language romantic comedy-drama film directed by Sibi Malayil and written by Kalavoor Ravikumar. It marked the acting debut of Navya Nair, starring alongside Dileep, with veteran actors Nedumudi Venu, Innocent, Sreenivasan, and Jayasudha in supporting roles. The narrative centers around Pavan (Dileep), who lives with his widowed father, Krishnankutty Menon (Nedumudi Venu). Anjana (Navya Nair), a former college mate, initially seeks to prank Pavan as revenge for a past ragging incident that led her to leave college. However, their playful antagonism soon blossoms into a genuine friendship and eventually, love. A significant subplot involves Pavan and Anjana’s endearing efforts to reunite Krishnankutty Menon with his estranged youthful love, Sreedevi (Jayasudha), who coincidentally happens to be Anjana’s guardian, leading to humorous and heartwarming situations.
Upon its release, “Ishtam” was a commercial success at the box office and garnered generally positive reviews from critics. Reviewers particularly lauded its harmonious blend of romantic comedy and heartfelt family drama, with many appreciating the natural performances, especially from Dileep and Nedumudi Venu, and the film’s ability to balance humor with emotional depth. The movie’s portrayal of familial bonds and its lighthearted approach to relationships contributed to its solid audience approval, reflected in an IMDb user rating of 6.9 out of 10. The film’s popularity extended beyond Malayalam cinema, leading to its remake in Hindi as “Mere Baap Pehle Aap” (2008) by director Priyadarshan.
