About the Movie
Pulival Kalyanam is a 2003 Malayalam romantic comedy film directed by Shafi and written by the duo Udayakrishna–Siby K. Thomas. The film stars Jayasurya as Harikrishnan, a hardworking, adopted young man from a modest background, and Kavya Madhavan as Ganga, the daughter of a wealthy businessman. The story unfolds around their comedic and sometimes chaotic romance, which begins after an accidental exchange of their identical mobile phones leads to frequent misunderstandings and gradual affection, despite the opposition from Ganga’s influential father, Raghavendra Sett (played by Lalu Alex).
Harikrishnan’s family includes his elder brother Karunan (Lal) and sister Sreekutty, and the film’s narrative is equally centered on their struggles. After Karunan sacrifices his arm in a fireworks accident to save Hari, the siblings work together to make ends meet. Numerous comedic side plots—especially involving supporting characters like Jagathy Sreekumar as Paramanandam, Salim Kumar as the moneylender Manavalan, and Cochin Haneefa as Dharmendra—add lively humor to a story otherwise grounded in typical family and romantic conflict. The movie is celebrated for its slapstick comedy and memorable performances from its ensemble cast.
The film’s music, composed by Berny-Ignatius, as well as its humor and relatable plot, helped Pulival Kalyanam to achieve success as one of the era’s best-loved Malayalam comedies. Its witty dialogues and iconic characters, especially Manavalan, have continued to enjoy cult status in Kerala, with Manavalan becoming a frequent figure in memes and internet humor. The movie’s enduring popularity led to a Kannada remake and solidified its place as a classic in Malayalam cinema.
