Thaaraattu (1981), also known as “Tharattu” (transl. Lullaby), is a Malayalam film directed by Balachandra Menon and produced by AM Sherif and SM Sheryff. The story revolves around a family that includes the matriarch Sreedevi and her three younger brothers Unni, Venu, and Viswanathan. Sreedevi is depicted as a dedicated elder sister and caretaker, managing both familial responsibilities and her job at a private firm, with the narrative delving into the siblings’ struggles, aspirations, and emotional bonds.​

The plot explores each sibling’s challenges: Unni is an industrious mechanic dreaming of better prospects abroad, Venu pursues his passion for ballet but is distracted by romantic entanglements and setbacks in his drama troupe, while the youngest, Viswanathan, is somewhat aimless and gets involved with Dileep, a mysterious young man entangled in criminal activity. As tensions mount within the family and Sreedevi falls seriously ill, the siblings rally together in search of funds for her treatment, further complicated by the involvement of Dileep, who ultimately becomes central to a dramatic family revelation.​

The emotional core of Thaaraattu is its exploration of family ties, secrets, and sacrifice. Sreedevi’s relationship with Dileep takes a tragic turn as it is revealed that he is her long-lost, illegitimate son—a secret she kept hidden even from her family. The film culminates in a poignant finale, as Dileep, on the verge of being reunited with his family, is killed, leaving behind unresolved grief and the enduring strength of familial love. Featuring performances by Srividya, Nedumudi Venu, Shanthi Krishna, and director Balachandra Menon himself, the film is also noted for its evocative score by Raveendran.
