“Innathe Program”: A Comic Portrait of Love, Friendship, and Family Secrets
Innathe Program is a 1991 Malayalam-language comedy film that revolves around the hilarious consequences of a secret marriage. Directed by P. G. Vishwambharan and produced under the Simple Productions banner by Changanassery Basheer, the film features a star cast including Mukesh as Unnikrishnan, Siddique as Rajendran, Radha as Indumathi (in her final Malayalam film role), Sainuddin as Salim, and Philomina among others. The screenplay and story were both penned by Kaloor Dennis, with musical score composed by Johnson and lyrics by Bichu Thirumala.
The story centers on three friends—Unnikrishnan, Rajendran, and Salim—who share a rented house and work at the same office. The arrival of Indumathi as the new accountant brings change, as she and Unnikrishnan fall in love and secretly get married, not informing their families. Unnikrishnan is particularly anxious about his strict father, and the couple’s efforts to keep their marriage a secret lead to a series of comical misunderstandings, particularly when both families unexpectedly decide to visit. The film is peppered with situational humor, witty dialogues, and explores the anxieties and dynamics of middle-class Malayali families.
Innathe Program received moderate reviews upon release, earning recognition chiefly for its ensemble cast, lighthearted narrative, and memorable music by Johnson. Radha’s performance was noted as her last appearance in Malayalam cinema, adding sentimental value for fans. Over the years, the film has come to be appreciated for its nostalgia-inducing comedy and its snapshot of early 1990s Kerala life.
