Millennium Stars

Directed by Jayaraj

Synopsis

“Millennium Stars” is a 2000 Malayalam-language drama directed by Jayaraj, starring Jayaram, Biju Menon, Suresh Gopi, and Abhirami. The film follows the journey of two childhood friends, Shiva and Shankar, who move from their native place to Mumbai in search of a living, only to find themselves wrongfully imprisoned. During their time in jail, they meet a bully named Karunan. The three manage to escape, and years later, Shiva and Shankar become a successful singing duo known as the “Millennium Stars”.

The narrative explores the duo’s rise to fame and the challenges that threaten their close bond. As they reach the peak of their singing careers, misunderstandings and a villain’s machinations threaten to separate them. It is Karunan, once a bully but now reformed, who tries to reunite the pair, urging them not to let petty differences destroy their partnership. The story weaves themes of friendship, ambition, hardship, and redemption, reflecting the emotional ups and downs of the protagonists as they navigate the music industry.

The film features a notable ensemble cast, including Harisree Ashokan, Devan, Kalabhavan Mani, Manorama, Jagathy Sreekumar, and Suja Raghuram in supporting roles. Its music, composed by Vidyasagar with lyrics by Gireesh Puthenchery, is considered among the composer’s best works, even though the film was not a box-office success. Despite its commercial outcome, “Millennium Stars” holds significance as the first Malayalam film released in the 21st century and is remembered for its musical score and performances, with Biju Menon winning the Asianet Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role.
