## Feather-Touch Comedy with a Big Heart: Thoovalsparsham (1990)
Thoovalsparsham is a 1990 Malayalam-language comedy-drama directed by Kamal that follows three carefree bachelors—Unni Krishnan (Jayaram), Vinod (Saikumar), and Boney/Bonny (Mukesh)—whose lives are upended when an abandoned baby girl appears at their doorstep. What begins as a frantic search to locate the parents turns into an unexpected journey of responsibility and affection as the trio decide to raise the child, whom they name Kingini. Their chaotic but tender makeshift parenthood is tested when the baby’s mother Maya (Urvashi) re-enters the picture, and a startling link to their conservative neighbor Ananda Padmanabhan (Suresh Gopi) is revealed.
Helmed by Kamal with a screenplay by Kaloor Dennis, the film was produced by Evershine Productions, with music by Ouseppachan, cinematography by Saloo George, and editing by K. Shankunni. The ensemble also features Ranjini, Innocent, Mammukoya, Oduvil Unnikrishnan, Sukumari, Bahadur, and Valsala Menon, adding layers of humor and warmth. The film’s urban bachelor-pad setting, comic set pieces, and tender domestic moments are balanced with a light social critique about gender norms, family honor, and unconventional caregiving.
Thoovalsparsham is widely recognized as an Indian retelling inspired by Three Men and a Baby (1987), itself based on the French hit Three Men and a Cradle (1985). Its popularity and adaptable premise led to multiple remakes across Indian languages, including Telugu (Chinnari Muddula Papa, 1990), Tamil (Thayamma, 1991; Asathal, 2001), and Hindi (Heyy Babyy, 2007). Over time, the film has earned a reputation as a charming, family-friendly classic in Malayalam cinema, celebrated for the lead trio’s chemistry and Kamal’s deft tonal balance of comedy and sentiment.
