Synopsis

## Sargavasantham (1995): An Intimate Portrait of Belief and Conflict in a Kerala Family

Sargavasantham is a Malayalam film released in 1995, marking the directorial debut of Anil Das. Adapted from the celebrated story “Vadakku Ninnum Vanna Pakshi” by Kakkanadan, the film is produced by Rasheed Kattungal under Kattungal Films. The screenplay is by Babu Pallassery, with evocative music by Ouseppachan and lyrics by Kaithapram. The cinematography is by Ramachandra Babu, and editing by K. Rajagopal.

Set against the backdrop of rural Kerala, Sargavasantham centers on a traditional Hindu family gripped by deep-rooted superstitions. The story follows Abhirami, portrayed by Chippy, whose life and relationships are shaped by the collision of age-old customs and emerging rationalist ideas. Siddique plays Roy, with Narendra Prasad as Dr. Sarathchandra Varma, providing pivotal performances alongside a strong supporting cast including Baiju, Vanitha Krishnachandran, Babu Namboothiri, Jagathy Sreekumar, Rizabawa, Seetha, and others. The narrative is an introspective look at family, belief, and the struggle between tradition and modernity.

Though Sargavasantham did not make a lasting impact at the box office or among mainstream critics, it is noted for its thoughtful depiction of superstition and social tension in Kerala. The film’s music and performances, particularly from Chippy and Narendra Prasad, have since been recognized by cinephiles as highlights. As the debut work of director Anil Das, Sargavasantham remains a noteworthy entry in 1990s Malayalam cinema, especially for its literary origins and its examination of Kerala’s cultural fabric.
