About the Movie
## “Parudeesa (2012): A Tense Satire on Faith and Reform in a Remote Malayalam Village”
Parudeesa (translated as “Paradise”) is a 2012 Malayalam drama that delves into the ideological battle between orthodoxy and reform within the Christian clergy of a secluded hill village in Kerala. Directed by R. Sarath and written by Vinu Abraham, the film features a strong ensemble: Sreenivasan as Bishop Angilithanam, Thampy Antony (also credited as Thampi Antony) as the radical priest Fr. Mannooran, Jagathy Sreekumar (in his last-completed film before his tragic accident), and Shweta Menon as the convent cook, Thressia. The narrative is propelled by the conflict between a progressive priest striving to enact social change and a conservative bishop determined to safeguard traditional values; Thressia’s character becomes intricately involved in their struggle.
The movie’s tone is distinctly satirical, critically examining how religious authority is wielded and often resisted in rural Kerala society. Producer Thampi Antony raised the film under the Kayal Films banner, and the evocative soundtrack is composed by Ouseppachan with musical score by Isaac Thomas Kottukapally. Visually, Sajan Kalathil’s cinematography captures the region’s lush yet isolated landscapes, strongly complementing the film’s philosophical undercurrent.
Parudeesa received considerable attention for its bold treatment of sensitive themes and articulate character studies. It divided critics: some lauded its pointed social commentary and performances, especially that of Sreenivasan and Shweta Menon, while others contended its handling of theological debates at times overshadowed narrative subtlety. Today, it stands out as a rare example of Malayalam cinema grappling head-on with the tumult between orthodoxy and reform, and remains significant for Jagathy Sreekumar’s final completed performance.
